Insurance for jewelry, art and collectibles

Home, condo and renters policies limit what they’ll pay for valuable items. Scheduled coverage lets you insure an engagement ring, a watch collection or a piece of art for what it’s actually worth.

TexPro Insurance is an independent insurance agency based in Houston, Texas, licensed in Texas only, serving clients across the state with property and casualty coverage.

The basics

Why valuables need more than a home policy

Most home policies include personal property coverage, but it comes with special limits on certain categories. The Texas Department of Insurance notes that home policies limit what they’ll pay for things like jewelry and art. Theft limits on jewelry and watches are often a few thousand dollars or less, and on some policy forms they’re lower still.

Valuables coverage closes that gap. It can be added to your home, condo or renters policy as an endorsement (often called a scheduled personal property endorsement or floater), or written as a separate policy. Each item is usually listed with a description and value, often supported by an appraisal or a recent receipt.

Scheduled coverage can also be broader than the standard property coverage on a home policy. Depending on the form, it may cover accidental loss, such as a stone falling out of a setting, and it may follow the item when you travel. Terms vary by carrier, so we compare forms as well as price.

Paintings, sculpture, prints and photography, often written at appraised or agreed value.

Valuables facts to know

  • TDI says home policies limit what they’ll pay for jewelry and art, and recommends talking to your agent about adding more coverage if you own expensive items.
  • Special limits usually apply per category and per loss, and theft limits are often lower than limits for other causes. Check the special limits section of your own policy.
  • TDI recommends keeping a home inventory with purchase dates, values, serial numbers and photos, stored somewhere other than your home.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does my homeowners policy cover for jewelry?

Usually a limited amount. Home, condo and renters policies typically set special limits on jewelry, watches and similar items, especially for theft, and the amount varies by policy form. Check the special limits section of your policy, or send it to us and we’ll review it.

Do I need an appraisal?

Many carriers ask for a recent appraisal or receipt for higher-value items, and some require one above a certain value. Updating appraisals every few years helps keep limits in line with current values.

What’s the difference between scheduled and blanket coverage?

Scheduled coverage lists each item with its own value. Blanket coverage insures a category up to a total limit, usually with a cap on any single item. Some people use both.

Does it cover a lost stone or a ring I can’t find?

Many scheduled forms cover accidental loss and mysterious disappearance, which standard home coverage often doesn’t. Coverage depends on your policy, so we’ll confirm the form before you buy.

Are items covered when I travel?

Scheduled valuables coverage often applies away from home, and some forms apply worldwide. Ask us to confirm the territory on any policy you’re considering.

Let’s list what matters to you.

Have your receipts or appraisals handy if you can. A licensed TexPro agent will compare valuables options from multiple carriers and walk you through them.
